The Global Leap Story

Global Leap was launched on Tuesday 29th February 2000 when we organised and hosted a worldwide 16 hour videoconferencing event. It demonstrated the power of videoconferencing as a resource which can be used to deliver exciting lessons to children around the world. Global Leap is the name that his students at Arbour Vale School chose for their 16-hour marathon global videoconferencing event on February 29th 2000. During a day of curriculum based videoconference events, pupils linked with classrooms in Australia, South Africa, Japan, Israel, Germany, Belgium, France, Iceland, Finland, Kosovo, USA and Peru. The Prime Minister, The Right Honourable Tony Blair MP, joined us to answer questions from classrooms around the world, and to launch the Global Leap website.

During the last six years Global Leap has helped teachers by:

• setting up and developing the museum, gallery and archive programme to share expertise and increase knowledgeand understanding within a given programme of study
• facilitating inservice training for teachers and other professions involved in schools.
• providing opportunities to develop and improve pupil's speaking and listening skills which are both important key elements of the English national curriculum across all key stages.
• enabling pupils to demonstrate their presentation skills to different audiences.
• increasing pupils confidence and motivation.
• developing sustainable activities which make videoconferencing an important resource in school.
• creating opportunities through exciting content identified to meet curriculum objectives.
• providing initial videoconferencing experiences
• facilitating, coordinating and linking videoconference users
• increasing the understanding of the exciting possibilities of videoconferencing
• providing support and information to enable schools to "get started"
• offering videoconference training workshops
• offering tips and tricks to help schools have a successful videoconferencing experience and highlight the pitfalls to avoid
• working with schools developing videoconferencing contacts to enable teachers to raise the standards of teaching and learning in the classroom
• enabling schools to bring a a variety of different cultures and experiences into their classroom from other classrooms located around the world.
• facilitating work with pupils who don't have access to a full time curriculum - eg Hospital School, Special schools and PRU's
• facilitating the development of European links to enhance their work in modern foreigh languages and cultures
